It is the question we field more than any other on our Salem showroom floor: luxury vinyl plank or laminate? Both give you a convincing wood look for a fraction of hardwood's price, but they are built differently and belong in different rooms. Here is how we walk Mid-Willamette Valley homeowners through the decision.
The Core Difference
Laminate is a photographic wood-look layer fused over a dense fiberboard core - tough on the surface, but the core swells if it sits in standing water. LVP is 100% synthetic all the way through, built on a waterproof rigid or flexible core, which is why it can go anywhere in the house, wet room or dry.
Where Our Wet Winters Change the Calculus
The Willamette Valley's mild, wet winters mean mudrooms, entryways, and laundry rooms see tracked-in moisture for months at a stretch. In those rooms, and in any kitchen or bathroom, we steer customers toward LVP without much debate. In dry living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices, laminate holds up just as well and often costs less per square foot.
Our Recommendation, Room by Room
- Kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, laundry: LVP, every time.
- Basements and daylight bonus rooms common in Keizer and Stayton split-levels: LVP, for the moisture margin.
- Bedrooms, home offices, formal living rooms: laminate is a great value pick if the budget is tight.
- Rental properties: laminate for tenant turnover cost, LVP anywhere a leak is a realistic risk.
Not sure which fits your rooms?
Book a free in-home estimateInstallation and Upkeep
Both click together over a proper underlayment and go down fast - most whole-home installs finish in one to two days with our crew. Neither needs refinishing; a damp mop and the occasional new plank after an accident is the extent of the maintenance either one asks for.
Bring Us Your Rooms
The right answer usually splits room by room rather than picking one floor for the whole house - and we will tell you honestly which rooms need LVP and which can save money with laminate. Compare both against our other options on the products page, or read what Salem-area customers have said about their installs on our reviews page.
